Rainy days are not uncommon in the north of Spain. This is an ideal plan for the days we cannot enjoy the beach or outdoor activities. You can have lunch in the Aquarium and complete a very relaxed visit. You will not be disappointed.
How to get there
We can drive there or go by train or bus. It is 13 kms away. If we drive, we can park at Poniente Beach car park, 50 meters from our destination. It takes 20 minutes by car plus parking time and walking to the site.
The option of going by train appeals to us. The station is less than 10 minutes walking from the apartments. We turn left as we leave the apartments, follow the old road to Gijón, pass the turn to “ciudad residencial” and turn left just before “El Piedra” hotel. The train takes 15 minutes to Gijón, and then we have to walk another 10 minutes. If we go by bus we catch it opposite the apartments and it takes us to a very central spot in Gijón. It takes 25 minutes and we then walk another 13 minutes to the Aquarium.
Description
Buying tickets in advance is recommended (see link below). The tickets are 7,50 € for children and 15 € for adults. The whole tour to the 60 freshwater and salt water tanks takes two hours. You can see a Cantabrian river, sturgeon, otters, salmon, Florida sharks, sea horses and colourful warm water fish.

What else to do
There are lots of things we can do in Gijón. We can go for a swim or a walk along any of the local beaches: Poniente or San Lorenzo; we have a very long walk along Gijón coastline or we can visit the old neighbourhood of Cimadevilla with the sculpture “Elogio al horizonte” by Chillida.
Only 100 meters from the Aquarium we can have a bite in one of Terra Astur cider restaurants. It has very reasonable prices and a local Asturian flavour.
