Romans left in Gijón important remains of their conquest and settlement; Campo Valdés thermae are among the most important sites in northern Spain. The Roman Villa of Veranes, near Gijón, is another good example. In summer it is interesting to attend the cultural programme of plays and music performances in the Villa.
How to get there
We can drive there or go by train or bus. It is 12 kms away. If we drive we can park at Jardines del Náutico car park, next to San Lorenzo beach, 500 metros from our destination, or at Cimadevilla car park, 300 metros from the Roman baths. It takes 20 minutes by car plus parking time and walking to the site.
The option of going by train appeals to us. The station is 10 minutes walking from the apartments. We turn left as we leave the apartments, follow the old road to Gijón, pass the turn to “ciudad residencial” and turn left just before “El Piedra” hotel. The train takes 15 minutes to Gijón, and then we have to walk another 20 minutes. If we go by bus we catch it opposite the apartments and it takes us to a very central spot in Gijón. It takes 25 minutes and we then walk another 13 minutes to the Roman baths.
Description
The thermae are one of three archeological museums run by Gijón council, together with the Roman Villa of Veranes and Campa Torres archeological site and museum. In summer combined visits and a cultural programme are offered. It is opened Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, entrance is free and reservation is required: 985 185151.
The visit takes about an hour. We follow a path over the bath remains and we can also visit a good exhibition of Roman baths all over the world.

What else to do
In Gijón there are lots of things we can do. We can go for a swim or a walk along any of the local beaches: Poniente or San Lorenzo; we have a very long walk along Gijón coastline or we can visit the old neighbourhood of Cimadevilla with the sculpture “Elogio al horizonte” from Chillida. The gastronomic offer is very wide: cider restaurants “La Galana” y “El Centenario”, in the town hall square or “Casa Zabala”, specialized in fish, are only a few among many options.
